DO BATS ONLY EAT INSECTS, CAN BATS FEED ON PEOPLE AND ANIMALS LIKE CATS AND DOGS, LIKE IN THE MOVIES?

WHAT DO BATS EAT?
http://brssremoval.com/BAT_REMOVAL_AND_PROO.html

DO BATS ONLY EAT INSECTS,
CAN BATS FEED ON PEOPLE AND
ANIMALS LIKE CATS AND DOGS,
LIKE IN THE MOVIES?

BATS ARE INSECT LOVERS WITH OF COURSE THE LATE FALL, WINTER AND EARLY SPRING  Exceptions, if the Roost that Bats picked is hot/warm it won't allow Bats to completely Hibernate. The Bats will wake-up and go looking for food.
Well they won't be able to get out the way they came in. As it will probably be frozen with ice and snow. So the Bats are going to follow the heat.
Eventually they will end up in your duct work then they can go anywhere in the house, building shed, garage, shop, barn. Worse the Bat can infect your pets(dogs/ cats) and livestock with Rabies.

****This can be VERY VERY DANGEROUS!!!!! BATS CARRY THE RABIES VIRUS AND THEY ARE HUNGRY AND THERE AREN'T ANY BUGS IN THE WINTER.
So the Bats are HUNGRY and going to take what they can get: you, your kids, your pet dog or cat. Many times we have found bats in the babies crib.
http://brssremoval.com/BAT_REMOVAL_AND_PROO.html To you it's just a shot but a Rabies Shot that could have been avoided had just got the Bats out before September. NOW THERE'S NOWHERE FOR THE BATS TO GO BUT TO STAY THERE TILL THE END OF MARCH!

THEN IT REALLY GETS EXPENSIVE:
HAVING TO SPECIALLY MESH AND CAULK THIS ENTIRE INSIDE OF YOUR HOUSE AND USE SPECIAL OWD LIVE TRAPS, THEN WE HAVE TO PROPERLY RELOCATE THE BATS TO A BAT RESERVE.

WHAT KIND OF INSECTS DO BATS EAT?

"Little brown bats are insectivores, eating moths, wasps, beetles, gnats, mosquitoes, midges and mayflies, among others. Since many of their preferred meals are insects with an aquatic life stage, such as mosquitoes, they prefer to roost near water. Brown bats forage near bodies of water and move in and out of adjacent vegetation.Evening forages are done in groups and above the water. They echo locate to find their prey. They are particularly good at hunting insects when they are at close range and packed together. When hunting, little brown bats capture prey both by gleaning and by catching them in the air. When in flight, bats scoop up the prey with their wings, while prey above water is directly grabbed with the mouth.
"Brown bat doesn't claim feeding areas like a territory, however individuals frequently return to the same feeding sites where they have previously made successful catches. When hunting swarms, brown bats usually select no more than two species. They feed on more species when they are scattered. If they do not catch any food, they will enter a torpor similar to hibernation that day, awakening at night to hunt again.
The bats' diet makes this species beneficial to agriculture as it eats many species of agricultural pests. Other than that, it can pollinate crops."

HOW MANY BATS CAN I HAVE IN MY ATTIC, HOUSE BUILDING,

HOW CAN I TELL HOW MANY BATS I HAVE?
IS IT POSSIBLE THAT I ONLY HAVE ONE BAT NOT A BAT PROBLEM?

It is possible that you only have one bat in your house. It could very well be that the Bat came in to the house on someones back.
It could have gotten in through an open door, unscreened window or vent, got disoriented and couldn't find his way out.

You could have anywhere from 1 to thousands of Bats in your Attic.
It all depends how long they've been roosting there and how big of a colony the bats were when they moved in to your attic, walls, soffits, house, building(s).
Signs you have Bats in your attic, walls, soffits, house, building(s).  You can see how a small Bat Problem can Become a Huge Environmental Bat Situation. It still amazes me how many bats can fit into such small areas.

  • Bats have an oily black film on them that the bat rub onto whatever surface they crawl on. They leave their black oily trail all over your siding, It looks like black or dirty streaks going down your siding, roof, soffit, porch, eaves. You can try power washing your siding and see if the black smudges come back.

  •  You will see little piles of Bat Guano on the ground below where the bats have been entering and/or climbing. You can sweep up the Bat guano carefully and mark the spot with chalk or flower and see if you get any more bat guano in those areas.

  • The more Bat Guano and Black Smudges you see from the individual Bat Entry Points will let you know ruffly how many Bats you are dealing with or not.

  •  or you can just sit outside at dusk between 8:00pm and 10:00pm and count the Flying Bats as the bat exit your attic, walls, soffits, house, building(s).
THEN YOU KNOW FOR SURE HOW MANY IF ANY BATS YOU HAVE!

DO BATS MIAGRATE HYBERNATE OR BOTH IN THE WINTER?

DO BATS HIBERNATE, FLY SOUTH FOR THE WINTER LIKE BIRDS DO OR BOTH ?

The Bats in Canada don't Migrate. They do however follow the Mosquito Population. Follow Where the Mosquito's, Moths and other flying insects and you'll find: The Little Brown Bat. There are Bat that Migrate but they aren't in Canada. The only Bats in Canada Migrate is on the bottom of a semi truck or in it. They have found Bats in Alaska because of it.
Bats do Hibernate with an Exception if the Roost that Bats picked is hot/warm it won't allow Bats to completely Hibernate. The Bats will wake-up and go looking for food.
Well they won't be able to get out the way they came in. As it will probably be frozen with ice and snow. So the Bats are going to follow the heat.

NOW THERE'S NOWHERE FOR THE BATS TO GO BUT TO STAY THERE TILL THE END OF MARCH.
Bats that have picked really good roosts that are 70 degrees or more such as:
  • Barns and/or Driving Sheds
  • Heated Shops, Garages, Storage Units, Buildings
  • Houses with Indoor Pools , Hot Tubs or Sauna, Guest and/ or Pool Houses
***REALLY ANY ATTIC, CEILING OR CRAWL SPACE OF ANY HOME OR ENCLOSED AREA IT DOESN'T HAVE TO BE HIGH OFF OF THE GROUND THAT IS A MYTH BATS CAN GET IN ANYWHERE THAT'S BIGGER THEN A DIME. WHERE THE TEMPERATURE IS 70% OR GREATER!!!!

NORMALLY: The Little Brown Bat lives in three different roosting sites: day roosts, night roost and hibernation roosts. Bats use day and night roosts during spring, summer and fall while hibernating in winter. Day roost are usually found in buildings or trees, under rocks or wood piles and sometimes in caves.
Nursery roosts are found in both natural hollows and in buildings (or at least close to them). Nursery roosts have also been found under ceramic tile, slate and sheet metal roofs of houses, garages, shed, under deck and attics, walls, between floors or additions of buildings.
Night roosts tend to be in the same buildings as day roosts, however these roosts tend to be in different spots that are more constrained and the bats pack together for warmth. Bats rest in night roosts after feeding in the evening which may serve to keep their feces away from the day roosts and thus less noticeable to predators.
Brown bats typically hibernate in caves, attics,or ceilings of your home, garage, garden shed, buildings, warehouses, storage areas. places that aren't frequented regularly or ever by human and other predators and perhaps unused mines. Northern populations of bats enter hibernation in early September and end in mid-May while southern populations enter in November and ends in mid-March.

Do Bats Really carry Rabies?

BAT RABIES: THE FACTS

"What is bat rabies?
Rabies is a disease caused by a virus that attacks the mammal’s central nervous system. It is spread by contact with the saliva of an infected animal.
Like other mammals, bats may have rabies. There are eight species of bats in Ontario, each of which has its own strain of rabies, but the more common strains are big brown bat, little brown bat, and silver-haired bat. The silver-haired bat tends to be reclusive and therefore rarely comes into contact with humans.
Rabid bats often lose their ability to fly, or do not fly well. They rarely become aggressive.
Human rabies from bats is a concern, but a relatively rare occurrence. In Canada, since 1925, five of the 26 cases of human rabies have been due to contact with an infected bat.
The last fatality in Canada was a 73 year old man from Alberta in April 2007 after contact with a rabid bat.
Careless handling of bats is the primary source of rabies exposure from bats.
What's the current situation with bat rabies in Ontario?
Despite large numbers of bats in southern Ontario, rabies is infrequent. From 2001 to 2005 there have been 314 bats confirmed with rabies in Ontario. Fewer than 2% of bats submitted for testing have rabies (2% of all bats acting strangely, dead, or have possibly bitten a human or pet). In the overall population, this percentage would be much lower.
Although the percentage of rabid bats is low, any bat encountered should be considered rabid unless captured and proven otherwise. Bats have small, needle-like teeth and claws. Bites or scratches from a bat can easily go undetected.
What is the response to bat rabies by the Ministry of Natural Resources?
The MNR, in partnership with the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care, highlighted public awareness of bat rabies in 2001.
It is important that the public know that bats can carry rabies and that they should medical advice if they come into contact with a bat. (see MNR News Releases: May 2001)
Bats cannot be vaccinated using baits, as has been done for foxes and raccoons, as they are insect-eaters and will not consume vaccine baits. However, despite large numbers of bats in southern Ontario, rabies is infrequent. International research is being conducted on vaccination methods for bats
Bats are an important part of our ecosystem and help reduce the insect population. Warn children to stay away from all wild animals, including bats. Submit all dead, sick, or easily captured bats to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency for rabies testing if exposure of people or pets has possibly occurred.
WE CAN Bat-proof your home, garage, shed, under your deck, guest/ pool house and out buildings, barns or shops."
